Succulents & Cacti
Succulents & Cacti
Succulents and cacti are water-storing plants adapted to arid environments. With their striking forms and minimal care requirements, they're perfect for sunny spots and forgetful waterers.
About Succulents & Cacti
Succulents and cacti have evolved to survive in harsh, dry environments by storing water in their fleshy leaves, stems, or roots. This adaptation gives them their distinctive appearance and makes them remarkably resilient houseplants.
As houseplants, succulents and cacti generally prefer:
- Light: Bright light to direct sunlight (most need at least 6 hours of bright light daily)
- Watering: Infrequent but thorough watering, allowing soil to dry completely between waterings
- Soil: Well-draining, gritty soil specifically formulated for succulents and cacti
- Humidity: Low humidity (they thrive in dry air)
- Temperature: Warm temperatures during growing season, cooler in winter for many varieties
With their architectural forms, varied textures, and low maintenance needs, succulents and cacti make excellent choices for sunny windowsills, office desks, and homes with dry air.

Succulent & Cacti Care Tips
Watering Wisdom
The most common cause of succulent death is overwatering. Follow these guidelines for healthy plants:
- Water thoroughly but infrequently (typically every 2-4 weeks, less in winter)
- Always allow soil to dry completely between waterings
- Reduce watering significantly during dormant periods (usually winter)
- Water the soil directly, avoiding the leaves and rosettes to prevent rot
- Use the "soak and dry" method: water deeply until it runs from drainage holes, then don't water again until soil is completely dry
Light Requirements
Most succulents need abundant light to maintain their compact growth and vibrant colors:
- Place in south or west-facing windows for best results
- Watch for signs of inadequate light: stretching, leaning, or pale coloration
- Introduce plants gradually to direct sun to prevent sunburn
- Rotate plants regularly for even growth
- Consider grow lights during winter months if natural light is limited
Soil & Containers
Proper growing medium and containers are crucial for succulent health:
- Use specialized succulent/cactus soil or amend regular potting soil with perlite, pumice, or coarse sand
- Always choose containers with drainage holes
- Terra cotta pots are ideal as they wick away excess moisture
- Consider the size of your container - succulents often prefer to be slightly root-bound
- Top-dress with decorative gravel or small stones to improve drainage and appearance
